CASTLECONNELL

Castleconnell is a contemporary residential development comprising 3 and 4 bed semi-detached and terraced houses and a creche located within an existing mature residential estate in Castleconnell village. The houses fill in three areas of the existing estate which were not completed following the recession, providing 52 high quality modern homes close to Limerick city. Pedestrian and cycle links are created within the site and linking out to Castleconnell village, improving accessibility for all residents.

The simple finish of painted render has been informed by the palette of the existing houses. Proportionally the new houses sit comfortably within the existing streetscape, with updated modern details and appreciation of current trends in housing design. Issues identified within the estate were bins left out on the street and a ubiquity of hard paving, so houses have included bin stores and landscaping to the front of the houses. Trees provide a sense of enclosure and bring an avenue feeling to the development.

The creche is centrally located, connected to the estate by a pedestrian and cycle path as well as to the road network to encourage sustainable travel. The building form is split into 4 distinct domestic scale volumes, each containing playrooms for different ages, with a central flexible space which will facilitate flexible use by the community. The building is covered in metal cladding which makes the creche stand out as a central hub for the surrounding residential areas.
